This weekend, I attended the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators 20011 Winter Conference at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. My mission was to get a lay of the magical land of children’s books and see where I could live in it.
There were keynote speakers and panel discussions but it all came down to an hour-long workshop with Lucy Cummins, Senior Art Director at Simon & Schuster. She was direct, enthusiastic, informative and inspiring. Almost everything I needed to know got covered. Seriously, worth the price by itself. After that it was all gravy, poured on the inevitable plate of chicken the hotel served for lunch.
One thing that’s startling about the world of kids’ books is how few men there are. Put another way, there was no waiting for a urinal during the break periods. Put another way, now I know how a woman at a Rush concert feels.
